Myths/Suggestions

Can tanning beds cook your internal organs?

No.  UVA with your average tanning bed penetrates about two mm deep (about the thickness of cardboard) into the body.  Imagine you were to heat up a slice of pizza.  Put the food in a bed for 30 minutes.  What will happen?  The pizza would get slightly warm.  Now put another piece in the microwave for 30 minutes.  What is going to happen to the slice?  Right, the pizza would be inconsumable.

What is the scent that I smell after tanning?

In a word Melanin.  Ultra Violet light in the UVA Range causes Melanin to enlarge and turn brown.  During the process Melanin releases it's own distinctive scent.  This release is as natural as the tanning process itself.  The scent is easily removed  by showering.

Why does some of a person's tan wash away?

The top skin layer is continuously renewing itself.  Depending on a persons age, the renewal cycle takes anywhere from once a month to about fifty days to complete.  Melanin that has been produced in the skin and tanned is working its way to the top of the skin until it surfaces.  Tanned Melanin on the surface of the skin is going to remain there only as long as it takes to shave or wash off.  In a sense some of a person's tan will wash down the drain.  Of course regular tanning visits rebuild what has been lost.

What is the advantage of tanning indoors?

The advantage is "CONTROL".  You always know what you're getting from an individual tanning session.  It is a very precise, calculated, controlled exposure designed to give you a cosmetically pleasing tan without burning your skin,  When the client goes outdoors, he/she places themselves  in an uncontrolled environment.  They do not know how much they are getting and frequently tanning outdoors result in developing Erythema or Sunburn.

Is one tanning session the equivalent to spending a day in the sun?

No.  One study indicated that based on very scientific controlled factors, a single tanning session is equivalent to approximately two hours of outdoor sun.
